Nursery |
|
|
- Prepare 10 raised beds (length 15 ft, width 2.5 ft, height 10 inches) for each acre of planted crop.
- Mix 10 kg each of well-decomposed compost (FYM), red soil and sand in a ratio of 1:1:1 per bed. Form flat leveled beds.
- Mix 10-15 g Furadon granules and 0.5 kg Suphala (15:15:15) fertilizer mix per bed.
- Drench the beds thoroughly with Captaf (2 g/lit) solution one week before sowing.
- Sow the seeds in shallow furrows 3 inches apart. Close the furrows with FYM soil-mix and cover with dry grass.
- Water the beds every morning with a can. During summer, additional watering and shade for 15-20 days are needed. Remove the grass cover when germination is observed (6-7 days after sowing).
- Immediately on germination (7-8 days after sowing) drench the beds with Captaf solution.
- Spray the seedlings with a mixture of Nuvacron 1.5 ml/lit + Dithane M-45 2 g/lit 15 and 25 DAS.
- Harden the seedlings by reducing watering during the 4th week after sowing. Plant the seedlings before 30 DAS. |

Fertilizer and Manure |
|
|
– Plough in 10 mt of well-decomposed FYM per acre into the soil.
– Basal Dose before transplanting : 24 kg:48 kg:20 kg NPK/acre (103 kg DAP + 30 kg CAN + 32 kg MOP)
– 1st top dressing : (20-25 DAT): 16 kg N/acre (80 kg CAN)
– 2nd top dressing : (40-45 DAT): 16kg N + 20 kg K/acre (80 kg CAN + 32 kg MOP
– 3rd top dressing : (60-65 DAT): 16 kg n/acre (80 kg CAN) DAT – Days after Transplanting
CAN – Calcium Ammonium Nitrate
DAP – Di Ammonium Phosphate.
MOP – Muriate of Potash |
| |
Field Preparation and Transplanting |
|
|
– Deep plough the land to a fine tilth. A deep soil profile ensures excellent root growth – a key to obtaining high yields.
– Plough in 10 mt of FYM per acre.
– Apply fertilizer mixture in furrows drawn 75 cm apart (Basal Dose). Form ridges and furrows over these to adequately cover the fertilizer.
– Irrigate the field thoroughly before planting.
– Plant seedlings 45 cm apart on the side of the ridges. Firm up soil around the collar region.
– Irrigate the crop every 4-8 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
– 2-3 weedinds and hoeings should be carried out during the initial 50 days for best plant growth.
– Top dressing should be carried out on the sides as per the recommendations. |
| |
Staking |
|
|
– At 20 DAT insert 5 foot long poles into the ground after every 5-6 plants. Tie horizontal poles at every foot along the vertical poles. Tie the plants onto the horizontal poles. Three rows of horizontal poles are needed to support the crop.
– Remove all side shoots below the first flower cluster except the branch immediately below it at time of staking. |
| |
Harvesting |
|
|
Picking starts 70 DAT. Pickings continue for 6-8 weeks. |

– 45 DAT – Sevin 4 g/lit + Foltaf 2 g/lit
– 55 DAT – Endosulphan 2 ml/lit + Foltaf 2 g/lit + Karathan 1 ml/lit
– 65 DAT – Sevin 4 g/lit + Foltaf 2 g/lit
– 75 DAT – Endosulphan 2 ml/lit + Dithane M-45 2 g/lit |

CAUTION |
|
|
Do not use the grain harvested from hybrid seed based crops as seed for the next crop. Doing so will cause a drastic reduction in crop yields due to segregation and loss of hybrid vigor. |
