Seed Rate |
- 1.5-2.0 kg per acre is required to for a plant population of 20,000 per acre in light soils, and 16,000 in heavy soils.
- Soak seeds in water for 12-14 hours before planting. |

Soil |
Well drained, fertile sandy loams to clay soils are ideal for Okra. Soil pH should preferably be neutral.

Field Preparation and Transplanting |
– Deep plough the field, followed by two harrowings.
– Apply 10 mt of well decomposed FYM per acre.
– Apply basal dose of fertilizer in furrows.
– Form ridges and furrows over the fertilizer bands to adequately cover the fertilizer.
– Irrigate the field one day before planting.
– Dibble the pre-soaked seeds on the side of the ridges at 30 or 20 cm spacing (as per season) and irrigate the next day. |
| |
Fertilizer |
Total fertilizer requirement: 80: 70: 40 kg of N P K per acre. |
| |
Basal dose
25-30 DAS
50-60 DAS or 1st picking |
:
:
: |
100 kg DAP + 100 kg MOP
50 kg DAP + 50 kg Urea
65 kg of Urea |
| |
Irrigation |
Irrigate the field every 4-7 days depending on soil type and weather conditions. Avoid water logging. |
| |
Weed Control |
- 2-3 hand weedings coupled with hoeings are needed for best growth.
- Weedicides like Basalin 1 litre/acre four days before planting, or lasso 2 litres/acre a day after planting can be used. |
| |
Harvesting |
– Pods are ready for harvest at 50-55 DAS.
– Pods are harvested every 2-3 days; 20–25 pickings can be expected.
– Each plant averages 25-30 pods; average pod weight is 12-15 g. |
| |
Plant Protection
Take need based plant protection measures. However, the following spray schedule is for guidance. |
| |
Before Planting |
: |
12 kg of Furadon granules to control nematodes in the soil. |
| |
15 DAS |
: |
Nuvacron 1.5 ml per litre + Dithane M-45 2 g per litre. |
| |
30 DAS |
: |
Nuvacron 1.5 ml per litre + Dithane M-45 2 g per litre + Karathion 1 ml per litre. |
| |
40 DAS |
: |
Sumiridine 0.5 ml per litre + Dithane M-45 2 g per litre + Karathion 1 ml per litre. |
| |
50 DAS |
: |
Carbaryl 4 g per litre + Foltaf 2 g per litre. |
| |
60 DAS |
: |
Endosulphan 2 ml per litre + Foltaf 2 g per litre |
| |
Though the hybrid is highly resistant to yellow vein mosaic virus, a few virus-affected plants may be seen. These should be rogued as soon as they are observed. The incidence of YVMV will be heightened during the rainy season in North India and summer/spring in the South. |
| |
CAUTION |
Do not use the grain harvested from hybrid seed based crops as seed for the next crop. Doing so will cause a drastic reduction in crop yields due to segregation and loss of hybrid vigor. |
