Season |
Mustard is grown in the post-rainy season. Plantings must be completed in October.
| |
Soil |
Well drained loamy soils to heavy soils, with neutral pH, are ideal for mustard. |
| |
Field Preparation and Transplanting |
- Deep plough the field to a fine tilth.
- Plough in 10 mt of well-decomposed FYM.
- Apply basal dose fertilizer at 45-50 cm spacing.
- Plant seeds either by hand dibbling or seed drill at a depth of 1.5 cm.
- Thin out excess seedlings at 15-20 DAS, leaving one seedling per hill. |

Plant Method |
- Plough in 10 mt of well-decomposed FYM at the time of field preparation.
- A total fertilizer dose of 32:16:16 kg of NPK/acre is recommended. Apply the entire ‘P’ and ‘K’ at the time of planting. Apply 50% of ‘N’ at 20-25 DAS and the remaining 50% in two doses at 25 day intervals. |
| |
Irrigation |
Irrigate the field soon after planting. Subsequent irrigation depends on need. |
| |
Weeding |
Keep the field free from weeds in the early stages of the crop. Two weedings are sufficient. |
| |
Plant Protection |
The first 35–40 days are very important. Spray the crop with the following spray schedule. |
| |
15 DAS |
: |
Dithane M–45 1 g + Monocrotophos 1 ml in 1 lit of water |
| |
22 DAS |
: |
Bavistin 0.5 gm + Dimethoiate 1 ml in 1 lit of water |
| |
30 DAS |
: |
Dithane M–45 2 g + Metasystox 2 ml per lit of water |
| |
40 DAS |
: |
Monocrotophos 2 ml + Dithane M-45 2 g in 1 lit of water. |

Harvesting |
Harvest the crop when the plants and siliquae turn yellow. Dry down in the field for 3-4 days. Thresh after drying. |
| |
CAUTION |
Do not use the grain harvested from hybrid seed based crops as seed for the next crop. Doing so will cause a drastic reduction in crop yields due to segregation and loss of hybrid vigor. |
