THE COMPANY

Plantgene Seeds Limited develops, produces and markets a full line of proprietary hybrids in sunflower, corn, sorghum sudangrass, grain sorghum, multi-cut fodder millet, pearl millet, rice, mustard and vegetables. These hybrids are sold across India under the PLANTGENE brand, which is more than fifteen years old. The company's research and production activities are centered largely in the southern Indian cities of Hyderabad and Bangalore, while the corporate office is in Gurgaon – a suburb of New Delhi.

The company’s Research and Development program has been formally approved and recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.

PLANTGENE brand seed is marketed through a network of distributors and dealers across India. The current product range includes about two dozen hybrids in various field crops and a dozen in vegetables.

The company also offers services related to contract multiplication of open-pollinated and hybrid vegetable seeds. Our capabilities combined with low-cost production make this proposition attractive. The daily wage in rural India being relatively low, we offer a massive advantage in terms of low-cost production. With a diverse range of agro-climatic zones, it is possible to produce vegetable seeds round the year. Finally, aside from cheap labor and favorable climate, India has a large pool of scientists and technicians in seed research and production.

Plantgene does contract multiplication and exports open-pollinated and hybrid vegetable seeds to the European Union.

The Indian law relating to intellectual property rights is contained in The Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act. The legal framework combined with the company’s supervision ensures that parental lines are protected.

MANAGEMENT

Plantgene is led by Madan Khunnah. A Chartered Accountant and MBA (USA), he has more than 20 years experience in the seed industry. He was Country Manager/CEO (India) for several years with Pioneer Hi-Bred International prior to his association with the PLANTGENE brand.
